Diego Luna hits the road to Park City, Utah, again. The Sundance alumni and veteran does it this time with another road movie where he’s at the helm, and not only acting as in that other coming-of-age Sundance film with co-star and friend Gael García Bernal back in 2001. “Mr. Pig” is a comedic drama about an American farmer who crosses into Mexico with an “undocumented” hog (in Luna’s own words) to sell it. Starring Danny Glover (“Lethal Weapon,” “The Color Purple”) and Maya Rudolph (“Bridesmaids”), the film will world premiere on Tuesday, Jan. 26 with at least two additional screenings and a special panel presentation with Luna and cast members earlier in the day (see listings below). Also appearing in supporting roles are José María Yazpik, Joel Murray, Angélica Aragón, and Gabriela Araujo. The film also transcends borders and even deals with issues such as immigration, though in the opposite direction. HELMING MORE MOVIES "Mr. Pig” is Luna’s third directed feature. It is also his second directed film in English, an apparent attempt to broaden the audience and market reach of his work by telling an American story and casting recognized Hollywood stars in the leading roles. The first English-language directed film by the star of “Y Tu Mamá También” fame was the 2014 “Cesar Chavez,” starring Michael Peña, America Ferrera and Rosario Dawson.

“Mr. Pig” is also the second movie Luna screens at Sundance as a director. He premiered the Spanish-language “Abel,” another humorous drama, at Sundance in 2010 that marked his directorial debut. The film is the latest coming out of Canana Films, the company he co-founded in 2005 with partner García Bernal (“Amores Perros,” “Y Tu Mamá También”–that other Luna road movie). The company has turned into a Latin American production powerhouse and arguably contributed to raising the quality of modern Mexican cinema. –CESAR ARREDONDO
