A film she co-wrote premiered at Sundance about a decade ago. Now Spanish filmmaker Eva Vives is competing at the fest’s 2016 edition, at the helm of an American short. Director Vives’ ‘Join the Club’ competes in the U.S Narrative Short Films category. The film is about a writer who face the dilemma of whether or not to join a professional networking club, which takes many interesting turns as it unfolds entirely during one therapy session. The Madrid native also wrote the screenplay.

This will mark the second time that a film involving Vives makes it to Sundance. ‘Raising Victor Vargas,’ a full feature in which she shares writing credits, was showcased at festival in 2003. Directed by Peter Sollett, the film won the American filmmaker awards at Austria’s Viennale Filmfestival and Spain’s San Sebastián International Film Festival. It also brought nominations to Vives at the Independent Spirit Awards and the Humanitas Prize, both based in Santa Monica, California.

It is worthwhile to note that ‘Raising Victor Vargas’ also screened at the Festival de Cannes in the Un Certain Regard section in 2002. ‘Join the Club’ is Vives’ third directorial work. Her other two shorts are ‘My, Myself & I’ (2007) and ‘She Pedals Fast for a Girl’ (2008), both american productions. –CESAR ARREDONDO
